Simulation skills

The Valculus suite of training programmes and learning materials has been developed over a 20 year period. They include both public programmes and modules designed to meet specific in-house client needs.

We have a solid reputation as a leader in System Dynamics-led training. Much of our material has been developed from front line consulting experience with blue chip clients. These programmes represent a significant training knowledge bank acquired from the application of SD-based simulation across a whole range of business issues. The programmes have been successfully delivered many times over the past decade and generate high levels of client approval.

Five skills are covered:

System dynamics. A complete range of courses (1 to 3 days) focused on using system dynamics to build simulations. The simulation software used is iThink from Isee Systems Inc.

Programmes develop both quantitative and quantitative system dynamics skills. The quantitative approach focuses on the hard skills of specifying, building and testing simulation models. Qualitative SD focuses on the process of working with clients to capture and synthesise organisation knowledge on specific business issues.

The Valculus programme also provides an introduction to the web-based communication technology for business simulation.

Specific industry. Valculus has a range of ValueSim modules covering business issues in the main long life cycle industries such as pharmaceuticals, utilities, energy, financial services and heavy process industries. These ValueSims are used to train delegates across a range of specific industry issue-based simulation.

Business process. Valculus has a range of ValueSim modules covering the majority of generic business processes covering strategy, HR, customer management, brand development, asset management, portfolio management and market development. These ValueSims are used to train delegates in business process simulation across a range of industries.

Knowledge management. Our knowledge bank of ValueSim modules contains knowledge accumulated at both a generic business process and a specific industry level over a 20 year period. We use a classic organisational learning approach to share this knowledge of the ‘way the world works’ and leverage its application in client organisations.

Competence development. Valculus has developed competency profiles at both individual and organisational level. Individual competences are targeted largely at the technical level.

Organisational competences look beyond the technicalities to the overall management application of business simulation.

Our competence development programmes are deployed at an overall company level to ensure the appropriate skills and knowledge are in place for clients and consulting partners to carry out their own business simulations - with more limited external support and guidance.
